The work jacket: where does it come from and how to wear it?

The origins of the work jacket

The work jacket was originally a functional garment whose origins go back several centuries.

18th century: With the advent of the industrial revolution, workers faced tougher working conditions. The first work jackets appeared, often made of tough textiles to protect against dirt, debris and the elements.

19th century: Work uniforms became more common, particularly in industries such as construction, marine and railroads. Work jackets were designed to withstand daily wear and tear, often made from sturdy canvas.

20th century: Military uniforms had a significant influence on workwear design. Work jackets adopted elements of military functionality, such as utility pockets and zippers, which are still widely seen today. Carhartt produced its first work jacket in pure cotton canvas in 1925:

During the Second World War, military uniforms and workwear continued to influence civilian fashion. Military surpluses also helped to popularize work jackets among civilians.

The post-war years saw the emergence of casual work culture. Work jackets became everyday wear, and clothing brands such as American brands Carhartt, Dickies and Levi's began to produce stylized versions of these jackets.

In the 80s and 90s, the work jacket became a fashion statement in its own right, particularly with the emergence of grunge style in the 1990s. Fashion brands produced work jackets with modern cuts and a variety of fabrics.

Today: The work jacket is a popular element of casual fashion, with many brands offering contemporary interpretations of this classic garment.

    Which materials are the best?

Work jackets are generally made of either cotton or wool. Here are the types of fabric we prefer at Première Manche:

    1. Wool work jacket:

    • Material: Wool is a natural, insulating material. It offers excellent protection against cold and damp, while remaining breathable. However, wool may not always be gentle on the skin.
    • Style: These jackets are often designed for warmth and comfort. They can be cut loosely to allow layering with other garments.

    2. Moleskin work jacket:

The term "moleskin" comes from "mole" and "skin". Originally, it was a garment designed for English gardeners. Today, the moleskin jacket has taken on its function as a work jacket, but is more often found in cotton with a suede look.

    • Material: Moleskin is a dense, robust cotton fabric, often used for workwear because of its durability. It can be lightly brushed for a soft texture.
    • Style: Moleskin jackets are renowned for their resistance to abrasion and tearing. They can have a classic work jacket cut, with utility pockets, button or zipper closures.

    3. Denim work jacket:

    • Material: Denim is a robust cotton fabric, often associated with jeans. It is durable and can take on a beautiful patina over time.
    • Style: Denim jackets are very popular in casual looks, whether with a slim fit or an oversized cut. Typical features include patch pockets, metal buttons and sometimes a canvas lining.

    How to wear it?

The advantage of the work jacket is that it can be worn with many different styles.

    1. Casual style:

Pair the work jacket with a basic T-shirt and jeans for a casual look. Add a pair of sneakers or boots to complete the outfit.

    2. Urban/grunge style:

Wear the work jacket over a hoodie and jeans for an urban or "grunge" aesthetic. High-top sneakers can also be added.

    3. Classic layering:

Use the work jacket as a layering piece over a button-down shirt and chino pants. For a more casual look, you can also decide to wear the shirt open with a plain T-shirt underneath.

    4. Vintage/ retro style:

Opt for a denim work jacket with a vintage T-shirt and pegged pants for a retro look. Classic shoes, such as loafers or oxfords, can complete the look.

    5. Fall/winter look:

You can choose a wool work jacket and wear it over a knitted sweater with corduroy pants, for example. A pair of boots will complete perfectly the look.

Don't hesitate to play with layering underneath the work jacket, especially with cooler temperatures on the way.

We also offer a range of work jackets in cotton, wool and denim.
