What are the rules to respect to obtain a perfect harmony between suit, shirt and tie and especially to avoid the fault of taste?

# Rule 1: the shirt must always be lighter than the suit and the tie darker than the shirt
We easily associate a dark gray or navy blue suit with a light blue, pale pink or white shirt. You can then choose a tie (or bow tie!) with original patterns either in colors of the same tone as the shirt, or in colors opposite on the color chart but complementary for more boldness and contrast. The tie will indeed attract the eye and be the center of attention. It brings all its personality to your look.
Nota bene: The pink shirt must remain very clear, pink is not always the most flattering because it can give a pale complexion.
If the shirt is white, you can express your creativity and go with the colors you want for the tie. The white is indeed neutral and allows all the agreements.

With a light blue shirt, you can choose a dark blue tie, but also burgundy or brown shades for a very elegant set.

# Rule #2: No black suits
The basic rule is: never wear a black suit. Prefer a dark blue or charcoal gray suit. But if you still have a black suit and that's all you have to wear, to avoid any faux pas, combine your black suit with a white shirt and a black tie. You'll get a very "Men in Black" look that will make all the difference in a formal occasion. We do not recommend any other color of shirt or tie that could have an unfortunate effect, because it would be too different from the black of the suit.
# Rule 3: the case of the light gray suit
The light grey suit, one of the must-haves of elegance, must be a must-have in your wardrobe. However, it is important to think carefully about the shirt and tie combinations for it. We advise you to choose a white or light blue shirt that will highlight the light grey of your suit. The objective is to always have a contrast between suit and shirt. Then choose a plain tie or a dark colored tie to accentuate the contrasts, for example a navy blue, dark green or burgundy tie for a very elegant effect.

# Rule 4: don't mix patterns
Your outfit must be coherent and easy to decode. With a patterned shirt, you should preferably choose a plain tie to avoid any faux pas.
For the more daring, we can venture to marry the patterns between them, but it should not be more than two and they should be different sizes to contrast well while having an echo of colors. Patterns add visual elements, so they must be chosen carefully if you decide to combine them.
For example, we will match a tie with big stripes on a gingham or fine stripes shirt or a tie with polka dots on a fine stripes shirt. The combination of these patterns can provide a nice contrast. Remember that the tie should always be darker than the shirt.
On the other hand we will avoid the association striped shirt and striped ties, or polka dot shirt and plaid tie.

In short, keep in mind that if your shirt has small or fine patterns, you can pair it with solid and faux-plain ties or larger patterns.

Stay sober in a professional or formal event that leaves little room for fantasy. Be more daring in a family event, wedding, cocktail party where you can allow yourself to catch the eye...
