The pink shirt for men: how to wear it?

1. The history of pink in men’s fashion

The word “rose” comes from the flower of the same name. In our current popular culture, it refers to the woman, in contradiction with the blue that evokes the man. Each of these colors differentiates the two sexes.

However, if we go back in time, we discover that pink was historically the color of man. It was then considered a strong color, derived from red. Many dolphins, the eldest sons of the kings of France, also carried it. She stood for manhood!

The rose really became the prerogative of women during the advent of the romantic movement in the 19th century. It is then synonymous with tenderness, femininity and softness.

And in the twentieth century, it is promoted by great icons of cinema such as Brigitte Bardot and her pink vichy dress or Marilyn Monroe and her tight dress "shocking pink".

In the 1960s, the rose became politicized and symbolized a protest movement against the establishment or established order. Some rock stars like Mick Jagger wear it as a sign of defiance.

Today the pink has entered with small touches in the male wardrobe and especially through the male shirt. It has even become a classic, easy to combine and brings more original touch than the eternal white shirt.

2. The rose: which rose?

There is a whole palette of roses, from the lightest to the darkest. For men’s shirts, we will focus only on pale and pastel tones. Exit fuschias, salmon pink and too daring roses…  

We can go on a plain rose or which is declined on fine stripes. You can choose all fabrics, from poplin to oxford, depending on the occasion of the moment.

3. With which colors to associate a pink shirt?

Wear a pink man shirt on jeans with a dark but neutral sweater to slice and highlight the pink. We combine this outfit with shoes and a brown leather belt as well as a nice watch to perfect the look. In the evening, swap your sweater for a navy blue blazer for a sleek and elegant silhouette.

Finally, if you opt for a chino, choose a beige or a blue. Avoid excessive colors in the outfit, the pink is already one.

In a more formal setting, at work or at a reception, wear your pink man shirt with a navy blue or dark grey suit, and choose a tie in blue, burgundy red or green tones.
